Bamboo Beach and Rescate Playa Isabela hosts an event for Surfrider Foundation Rincón
With the venue provided for by Bamboo Beach in Isabela, Rescate Playa Isabela hosted Surfrider Foundation Rincón for the showing of the film 'Salva Tres Palmas.' The film documents the progress of implementing the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve as the first official marine reserve on the main island of Puerto Rico. Highlights of the film include essential communal, scientific, and environmental agencies' points-of-view on the importance of protecting this unique area, fantastic photography and video, and outstanding music provided for by Mijo de la Palma. Surfrider Foundation Rincón would like to thank Bamboo Beach for providing the excellent venue, and Rescate Playa Isabela for hosting the event. We will look forward to future collaborations.
Aggressive Protections for Elkhorn Coral
Don't mess with Elkhorn coral reefs! If you break, take or damage Elkhorn corals, like those found in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, you can spend six months in the pokey and have to pony up $25,000 in fines.

When pigs fly
Surfers and beachgoers in Rincón enjoyed a beautiful breezy day last Thursday with waves rolling in at Domes Beach. All, however, was not quiet as a helicopter kept appearing overhead, landing behind the Dome and then headed out to sea hauling a variety of loads.
In addition to the choppers, rumours were flying around town. Was nuclear waste being removed from the plant and dumped at sea? Was there some covert operation going down? Inquiring minds wanted to know.
As it turns out, the flights were part of the staging for the KP1-5 Project. The purpose of the KP1-5 Project is to work toward a solution to the closure of Desecheo and Navassa Islands to Amateur Radio operators by achieving lawful, periodic access to these islands pursuant to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service authorization.
You can track the efforts of the Desecheo radio team on line.

EPA’s ocean survey vessel open to public in Mayaguez this Thursday!!!
“The waters around Puerto Rico are some of the most ecologically-significant in the world, so protecting their health is a priority for EPA,” said EPA Acting Regional Administrator George Pavlou. For nearly two weeks, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will study water, reefs and marine habitats in the Caribbean Sea around Puerto Rico.
At stops in San Juan and Mayaguez, the public will be able to tour the OSV BOLD to learn about how EPA scientists conduct their research. On Feb. 19, the ship will be docked at the Mayaguez Port Authority Dock and will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
I think this is a rare and unique educational opportunity to see what the EPA is doing with our waters and the technology being used. Check out this link for more information.

Surfrider Foundation Rincón's recent event; A paddle and Potluck Dinner
Recently, Surfrider Foundation Rincón had a paddle and a potluck dinner at Rincón's town beach. Though the weather wasn't optimal, 20 excited participants came out to paddle from Town Beach to the lighthouse and back.
After the paddle, the paddle participants joined the dinner party that was underway under the gazebo. All in all, around 40 people enjoyed the buffet of appetizers, specialty dishes, desserts, and wine provided by Barefoot wine. Surfrider Foundation Rincón would like to thank all the volunteers and participants that helped make this event possible.

Yo Limpio a Puerto Rico
Benicio del Toro may not spend all his time in Puerto Rico, but he still understands the importance of the coral reefs that surround the Island of Enchantment and that human behavior on land can damage the very reefs that help keep our planet healthy. Check out this PSA narrated by del Toro.
If Beni can help keep Puerto Rico clean, so can you...join us at our next beach clean up.
