Rincon Student Art Project Underway

The Surfrider Foundation's Aquatic Art Project is underway at Rincon's Jorge Seda Crespo Middle School. Check out the slideshow from Day 1 or simply learn more about the program.

Rincón Students signing up for art workshop

More that 40 students signed up for the "Aquatic Art Workshop" to be held on Saturdays March 14 and 28 at the Jorge Seda Crespo Junior High School near Rincon's balneario from 9am to 3pm.

It will be a fun workshop where the end result will be an environmental book based on the art produced during the workshop. There will also be an art show of the paintings at the Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito de Rincón in May.

Donate a few hours of your time to a worthwhile project as students from Rincon's Jorge Seda Crespo middle school create original artwork depicting coral reef lessons and themes. These original works will be assembled into an artbook and presented live at a local art show.

Dr. John Turner, an endocrinologist at the University of Toledo, has been studying the health of coral reef ecosystems, since 1997. “Reef Monitor,” excerpts from his lecture series to high school students interested in marine sciences, offers a fascinating look at the factors directly effecting coral reefs, threatening the reefs themselves and reducing the organisms that previously thrived in them.

Aggressive Protections for Elkhorn Coral

Don't mess with Elkhorn coral reefs! If you break, take or damage Elkhorn corals, like those found in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, you can spend six months in the pokey and have to pony up $25,000 in fines.

Stronger Protections for Elkhorn Coral

NOAA’s Fisheries Service has increased its protection of threatened elkhorn and staghorn corals in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands through a new rule to prohibit activities that result in death or harm to either species. The new regulations took effect on Nov. 21, 2008.

The rule prohibits the import, export, take, and all commercial activities involving elkhorn and staghorn corals, including:

* discharging any pollutant or contaminant that harms the species
* damaging the species’ habitat
* collection or any activities that result in the corals’ mortality or injury
* anchoring, grounding a vessel, or dragging any other gear on the species

The Tres Palmas Marine Reserve was established in 2004 to help protect to protect some of Puerto Rico's healthiest elkhorn communities for future generations.
